StartupCamper Perch Aims to Help Companies Preserve Culture via Ad Hoc Video
Executive Editor, TMC
A company called Perch had the chance to tell its story last night in front of the StartupCamp audience and a panel of judges at ITEXPO (News - Alert) Las Vegas. Danny Robinson of Perch said that the company’s solution aims to preserve company culture by delivering a solution that enables ad hoc videoconferencing between individuals or work groups via wall-mounted mobile units.
Robinson led with the theme of culture, saying he believes culture is the most important aspect of an organization, and one that can erode as a company grows, adds branch offices, and allows telecommuting. The Perch solution, however, can enable people within the organization to communicate more easily – and on a more personal level – for purely business or more personal reasons. And corporate culture spreads when people get to know each other on a personal level, he said.

The always-on video window connects spaces together and makes people feel they are in the same location. The system goes live when it detects a face. And people can pop in and out of meetings quickly and easily, said Robinson.
Robinson said that one Perch beta user commented, “We’ve changed the way we work forever, and we’re never going back.”
StartupCamp organizer Larry Lisser (News - Alert) of Embrase Business Consulting indicated that he’s also sold on the value of Perch, adding, “You can’t really understand the power of this product until you try it.”
Perch, which is free but for which the company expects to charge for administrative features like managed bandwidth control and other premium features, is now in beta. It should be in the App Store by the end of next week.
Perch was one of four companies doing five-minute presentations (followed by judge comments, and a judge and audience Q&A) at StartupCamp. The event was sponsored by Momentum, uberconference, TelePacific Communications, Phone.com (News - Alert), and Modus Create.
